Dunedin and Otago
The second largest city in the South Island, Dunedin is a city of delightful contrasts. Named the ‘Edinburgh of the South’ due to its rich Scottish heritage, Dunedin was founded on the back of the South Island’s gold rushes of the 1860s.
The financial centre of New Zealand in those early years of European settlement, Dunedin was built well by the canny Scots. Over the decades the finest Victorian, Edwardian and neo-Gothic designs from the old country have inspired many of the city’s buildings.
Dunedin has an air of age, grace and permanence about it that few other cities possess.
